laura jones returns for another ep outing on her label. despite weighing in with an incendiary first release that found mandar s sam remixing infuse s karousel and a follow up from jones that included one of the sadly departed trevino s final remixes, the label took a backseat to the birth of her daugter in 2017. a year on however and the pace has picked up with an ep from renowned modular wizzard kamran sadeghi at the start of the year and this latest ep from the label boss. the two originals are a snapshot of her evolving style. pathway places skippy beats and sub heavy kicks under a soaring chord sequence, abstract vocal samples and ethereal pad riff. tough crowd takes a moodier approach with a menacing sub bass and drum arrangement, bubbling filters building to a hook that unfolds halfway through to create a moment of formidable intensity. lee renacre s recent revival of his 100 hz alias courtesy of well received outings on slow life and bosconi among others, has found the producer on career-best form and he turns in a sublime remix that makes deft use of delicate top lines and bubbling oscillators to create a powerfully heady atmosphere.

moss co. continues into 2018 with stephan bazbaz & asael weisss only ep, a three tracker equipped with two original productions, complimented further via a remix from fuse�s very own rossko. lead track only, a collaborative effort between bazbaz & weiss, kicks things off with decidedly a stripped back sonic palette, rich in analogue warmth. sparkling keys bounce off tripped-out atmospheres, as steady rolling beats and subs push the track onwards. the ep continues with rosskos only reinterpretation, an extremely accomplished debut remix that deftly draws from the original�s blissed out musicality, with renewed razor-sharp focus on low-end theory and percussive weight. a promising sign of things to come for this recently indoctrinated producer. bazbaz closes off the package with tagzimi, a solo endeavor that sees modulating dub chords trade blows with snappy percussion and rich pads, a beautifully constructed roller destined for long form sets during the early hours. landing in june, the only ep is set to be a staple feature in the record bags of discerning djs alike throughout the summer months and beyond.

synkro aka joe mcbride teams up with veteran arovane aka uwe zahn for a sublime collaborative ep on apollo. refractive (index) sees the duo exploring their shared love of broken beats and dreamy soundscapes. the pair are also connected through their affection for yamahas venerable handheld sequencer, the qy700 (also a favourite of dutch lo-fi house master legowelt) arovane a long time stalwart of the acclaimed city centre offices imprint explains: everything started with a detail in an interview with joe that grabbed my attention. i spotted a qy700 sequencer from yamaha on one photo. i used this piece of gear for decades to sequence all of my hardware and to produce my music. its part of my trademark sound of rhythm programming. one of the factors that makes the qy700 beloved is its ability to change parameters in realtime to shuffle, shift, expand or compress the timing of each pattern independently. its touch can be felt throughout the oscillating rhythmic figures that wend through the gauzy pads and drifting melodies. we share the same wavelength when it come to breakbeats, musical taste and melodies, arovane continues this ep is the beginning of something special!

there are west coast classics, and then there is music to driveby, the third lp from the group that birthed mc eiht: compton�s most wanted. although the group started in the late �80s with multiple mcs (including tha chill and boom bam), by 1992 eiht as pulling the group�s vocal weight � supported by dj mike t on turntables and production � and even producing and co-producing tracks. music to driveby might lack beats-per-minute variety, but to fans that�s not a bad thing. across the board, this is mid-tempo, super deep, funky hip-hop, made for cars creeping along boulevards across the west and south, and it�s about as good as it gets for such purposes. just about filler-free, the album struts intensely and with purpose, as eiht throws tales of cali street life at fans for an hour straight, almost without a break. this solo marathon is given a respite only once, with scarface�s guest spot on �n 2 deep,� an excellent hood roller supported by a soulful guitar lick sampled from lyn collins� �do your thing.� elsewhere, eiht rolls alone and intensely, on cuts like the classic mash single �hood took me under�, the album�s second single and tim dog attack �who�s fu**ing who?�, the hometown big-up �compton 4 life�, and hustle tales like �jack mode� and �i gots to get over.� after this album, eiht released more classics under his own name, and with similar fan worship. it was the continuation of a legendary career and music to driveby still ranks high on anyone�s �west coast legends� playlist.

lee burridge, lost desert and junior akwety return with summer vibes all the way. following last year s subtle monster lingala, they bring the sunshine once again with three tracks. elongis vocal floats above its foundation of warm sub bass and groovy beats and always seems to induce at least one person in the crowd to sing along. even though we know they don t speak lingala (a language from congo). mona yo is a little groovier. floaty house music for outdoors. talking of floaty, the ep is wrapped up by float on. its pretty for sure but has a certain drive thats been rocking the all day i dream dance floor all year. close your eyes and daydream.

lb aka labat is a regular cat in the french circuit with releases on disques solaires, dko or recently wolf music. this ep highlights once again his unique style with an all inside mpc production blending samples with sharp signature beats. the opener is stone cold disco house jam in the deep parrish tradition. nothing new is a spacey hip hop joint taking you a ride to destination spice go - a detroish hip house beat. on flipside, celestial plan is a special party break with deep jazz samples mixed with a mpc signature that gives this track a very uncommon signature and groove. better be ready for this one before landing to sticky green countryside.
